Black Cockatoos: Cultural Significance

From Dannon Wu

"‘Black Cockatoos: Cultural Significance’ invites audiences into the spiritual and cultural perspective of the Noongar people, whose deep connection with the Carnaby’s black cockatoo (Ngoolark) has endured for generations. Through the voices of Elders, the film explores how these iconic birds are more than just wildlife; they are messengers, seasonal markers, and sacred kin.

Created as part of the Keep Carnaby’s Flying – Ngoolarks Forever project, ‘Black Cockatoos: Cultural Significance’ is a call to action grounded in both Indigenous knowledge and scientific research. This science-informed, community-powered project, led by researchers from Murdoch University’s Harry Butler Institute, aims to halt the decline of the endangered Carnaby’s cockatoo by restoring habitats, engaging local communities, and honouring cultural heritage. With the Ngoolarks’ unmistakable calls soaring through the skies of southwest Western Australia, the film highlights the urgent need to safeguard both species and their significance."
