7 Minutes of Brain Activity After Death

From Mia Siodmok

7 Minutes of Brain Activity After Death’ follows the kaleidoscope of memory and emotion that unfolds in the brief window between life and death. As Eva's consciousness lingers in its final minutes, fragments of her life emerge in a dreamlike rush. Love intertwines with fear and reality dissolves into feeling, as the future Eva hopes for begins to blur.

The film traces the evolution of Eva and Lilah’s relationship through warm, golden-lit recollections– from the discovery and first love that carves Lilah’s place in Eva's final moments to the disillusionment that confronts the collapse of their edenic promise.

Hello! My name is Mia Siodmok, and I’m a 17 year old director. I’m originally from the United Kingdom but am now based in Australia, studying at Albert Park College. It is an honour to have my short film ‘7 Minutes of Brain Activity After Death’ be nominated for Best Acting! This project has been a dream come true for me and reflects my passion for philosophy and exploring complex ideologies through film. Working alongside an incredibly talented, young cast and crew throughout this past year has been life changing. I am particularly focused on uplifting the voices of women and LGBTQIA+ communities. I strive to create meaningful stories that inspire acceptance and connection through my work.

What inspired you and your work?

As a queer woman, my personal experiences deeply shaped this film, inspiring me to spotlight an LGBTQIA+ narrative and explore the emotional depth and tenderness that can exist within those relationships. Additionally, my own experiences growing up, burdened by the fear of an uncertain future, inspired the film's message to express love and appreciation for the people you care about– because you never know when a moment will be your last. The film was visually inspired by the work of David Fincher and the story-telling style of Luca Guadagino, focusing particularly on his ability to capture the intricacies of human relationships and desire.
