After Tonight

From Braie and Veronica Bakar and Vedovato

An impulsive New Year’s kiss forces two best friends to answer whether one night is enough.

We're Braie Bakar and Veronica Vedovato and we're emerging filmmakers with a background in writing, directing, costume and art deparment. Throughout our time at AFTRS, we began a long-standing collaboration, bonded through our shared love of period dramas, romances and works by female filmmakers. Art and costume department are our bread and butter, but our true twin pillars reside in writing and directing - empowering each other to celebrate and take charge of underappreciated genres like romance.

What inspired you and your work?

Our friendship and past collaborations have always involved stories of romance, love and identity and the ever-evolving questions that surround its endurance. 'After Tonight' marks our test of how our idealistic romantic values remain intact amidst the difficult nuances of real modern relationships. The film takes it that step forward, posing the question - is love worth pursuing even knowing the odds guarantee an untimely end? As first generation Australians, our sense of selves and connections with others have been met with trials of cultural differences, timing and distance, yet our values have never wavered. We've sought inspiration from the works of Greta Gerwig, Richard Linklater and Celine Song, and their wistful approaches to romance through passages of time.
