An Inconvenient Encounter

From Rupert Mclorinan

In the midst of The Great Emu War and post depression in rural Australia, two contrasting yet equally half-witted farmers, John and Rob, face head to head with one of the dangerous beasts. Against the guidance of indifferent Army officials, the farmers deal with the situation themselves.

My Name is Rupert, and no, I am not a 94 year old Australian/American former business magnate and investor. That's the other guy. Instead, I am a 22 year old in his final year of a Bachelor of Film and Television at Deakin. I had the absolute pleasure of making this film with an amazing crew, we wanted to stand out in the student film space by making a comedy, . Alongside my filmmaking, I'm a rookie stand up comic and I wanted to test my comedic chops by writing and directing a comedy movie that is fun and a bit chaotic, just enough to make sure audiences have a good time.

What inspired you and your work?

I was inspired to make a comedy film because among student films being made around us, it felt like it was becoming a forgotten genre. I chose the topic of the Australian Emu War because it just seemed like a story that wrote itself and I was stunned that not that many people have had a crack at it. I'm inspired to make comedies due to my stand up background, laughter and jokes come naturally to me. I want people to remember that having a laugh can make you forget about life problems, even if you're watching only short film, I want people to feel how much fun we had making it so that they can have fun watching it.
