B5. Best Animation (Nominee)
Fishboy
From Christa Poh
A boy feels the pressure of his overly-enthusiastic dad’s wish for him to continue his swimming legacy.
Hello, I'm Christa Poh! I graduated from RMIT University in December in Animation and Interactive Media. I'm a passionate storyteller and I love whimsical and silly things. Animation is such a versatile medium with endless possibilities and I hope to portray that flexibility in my work.
What inspired you and your work?
I was inspired by my home country Singapore, growing up in an environment where parents would often push their children into paths that they didn't necessarily choose for themselves. Children are put under a lot of stress, and parents don't often realize the extent of it. Even so, I didn't want to antagonize them-- at the end of the day both parties are human and just want to understand and connect with each other. I'm inspired by the comedy of works like Punch Punch Forever (speedoru), Smiling Friends (Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel) and Jaiden Animations, as I think that their storytelling uses animation as a medium to it's full extent, and it's unconventional and fun.
