The Animator's Dilemma

From Nishtha Gupta

Based on the animator's lived experience, "The Animator's Dilemma" explores the mental loops of anxiety, overthinking, and creative block that many artists face. Represented by a persistent red figure, these intrusive thoughts continually disrupt the animator's process, until the very force that causes paralysis ultimately pushes them back to create.

Hello, my name is Nishtha Gupta. I am currently based in Delhi, India, and recently completed my Master's in Animation, Games and Interactivity at RMIT University in Melbourne. My short film, The Animator's Dilemma, has been nominated, and I am honoured to be part of this event.

What inspired you and your work?

The Animator's Dilemma' was inspired by my own lived experience as an animator navigating anxiety, overthinking, and creative block. Throughout my creative journey, I often found myself trapped in repetitive thought patterns, self-doubt, and the pressure to constantly produce meaningful work.

I wanted to visualise these internal struggles in a way that felt honest and relatable. The red character in the film symbolises anxiety and intrusive thoughts, an ever-present force that disrupts the creative process while paradoxically pushing it forward. Through simple character design and visual storytelling, I aimed to explore the complex relationship between mental health and creativity, and to give a voice to experiences that many artists quietly carry.
