The Flop

From Tommy Truong

Following an arrogant, fame-hungry young Australian director convinced his breakthrough lies in premiering at the Melbourne International Film Festival. Obsessed with success but lacking talent and self-awareness, his disastrous filmmaking efforts end in rejection, forcing him to confront failure at a pre-screening of MIFF projects.

Hi my name is Tommy Truong, I'm currently studying at RMIT for my third and final year doing a Bachelors of Media and Communications. I love all things film and television related, I strive to produce works of media that all people of the world can laugh, cry and enjoy all at the same time!

What inspired you and your work?

The film was created in relation to creating a piece of media for my RMIT class studio called: MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: MAKING MEMORY AND PLACE, where we in multiple groups had to make a media piece about the film festival whether that be it's meaning, history, cultural significance or other. My project resolves around the festival as the main character is chasing the goal of getting his film into the festival for fame and riches. The style of the short film came from sitcom satire like shows such as 'The Office' and 'Abbott Elementary' I wanted to take the comedic and self awareness and apply them to this film to critique and make fun of film production tropes. Underneath that I wanted to highlight that films nowadays are being plagued with the fear of AI being used and the lack of authenticity in them, by demonstrating this in the film I aim to get audiences to value authenticity and real human creativity over artificial intelligence.
