Houses in My Heart
From Rose and Poppy Gallimore
As a teenage girl travels across Sydney Harbour at night, memories from childhood begin to resurface through reflections, fragments, and fleeting moments. Blending live action with mixed-media elements, Houses in My Heart explores nostalgia, identity, and the bittersweet experience of growing up. Through dreamlike visuals and layered sound, the film reflects on the places, people, and memories that continue to shape who we become.
Hi, our names are Rose and Poppy, and we are two 15-year-old filmmakers from Sydney, NSW. We share a passion for storytelling and filmmaking, particularly films that explore emotion through visual imagery and atmosphere. Houses in My Heart is one of our first independent short films and represents months of planning, filming, editing, and creative experimentation. We enjoy exploring different filmmaking techniques, including mixed media and visual symbolism, to tell meaningful stories. Through our work, we hope to create films that encourage audiences to reflect on their own experiences and connect with universal themes such as identity, memory, and growing up.
What inspired you and your work?
Houses in My Heart was inspired by our own experiences of growing up and reflecting on childhood. As teenagers, we are at a stage where childhood can feel both close and distant at the same time, and we wanted to explore that feeling through film. We were particularly interested in how memories are rarely experienced in a clear or linear way. Instead, they often return as fragments, emotions, and sensory details.
Creatively, we were inspired by filmmakers who use visual storytelling to communicate emotion, as well as by the Sydney Harbour setting itself. We experimented with reflections, layered sound, and mixed-media elements to represent memory as something fluid and constantly changing. Ultimately, we wanted to create a film that felt personal while also reflecting a universal experience of growing up.
