From Lexie Rough
Jack is struggling for creative ideas and needs to submit an artwork for an upcoming deadline. A vision of takes over his mind and Jack grows to become deeply emotionally and artistically entangled with it.
Hello, my name is Lexie Rough. I am from Melbourne, Victoria and I am currently studying Media Communications at RMIT university. My short film "Submission", has been shortlisted in the category of Best Editing. I have been in awe of the power of film all my life, and I am so grateful to be able to study this medium and have opportunities to create and share media with others. “Submission” was the first film I have written, directed and edited myself. Thanks to my crewmates and university I was able to make a film I am proud of and that will fuel my passion to create more in the future.
What inspired you and your work?
“Submission” reflects my own personal experiences with artmaking and the intrinsic relationship that is present between one’s subconscious mental state and their creative mind. Through what I learn from artists around me a big part of their work stems from how they look at their memories and dreams and how they interpret their world. This film aimed to intimately look into the mind of a troubled artist presenting art-making as an extension of one’s mind. Thematically, Michael Gondry’s 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, was a significant inspiration during the writing process, when looking at how best to explore ideas surrounding dreams and the subconscious. I also wanted “Submission” to have a distinct visual style which complemented the narrative, with inspiration taken from high colour contrast such as in Damien Chazelle’s 2016 film La La Land.
