D6. Best Directing (Nominee)
Luckless
From Soumil Aggarwal
A clumsy young man who on his way to a date encounters every obstacle imaginable, and everything that could go wrong, does go wrong.
My name is Soumil Aggarwal and I am from Melbourne, Victoria. I am currently studying the Bachelors of Film and Television at the University of Melbourne, Victorian College of the Arts. My latest short film project 'Luckless' was shortlisted under the directing category. With a friend, I have been creating stories and building my skills in filmmaking for the past 8 years. This is my first project that I created fully on my own. I personally take an interest in directing and editing films as I enjoy working with others on set and the process of putting everything together in the final stages of production.
What inspired you and your work?
My film was inspired by the idea of making people laugh. I didn't create 'Luckless' with and meaningful message, rather to allow audiences to laugh and feel entertained. I also began my filmmaking journey with comedy skits, and I felt going back to my roots was a great way to put my talent on display. As creative influences, I looked at Edgar Wright, Rhett and Link, and Bo Burnham. Although not directly connected to the film's style, these artists inspired my thinking of comedy on screen and the urge to try it out myself.
